What happens during your hearing test?
Every appointment at The Hearing Space is built around you.
Appointments run 45 to 90 minutes, significantly longer than the 15 to 20 minutes typical of NHS or high-street settings.
There is no rush, and no pressure to make any decisions regarding hearing devices. We simply want you to be better informed about your hearing.
1. Friendly welcome and case history
We start with a relaxed conversation. Where are you struggling? What does it affect? This shapes everything that follows.
2. Ear examination (otoscopy)
Paul checks your ear canals and eardrums for wax, blockages, or anything that might affect the accuracy of the tests.
3. Pure tone audiometry
Listening to a series of tones through headphones, your quietest audible threshold at each frequency is recorded. The result is your audiogram — a clear map of your hearing.
4. Speech-in-noise testing
Can you hear in a quiet room but struggle in a restaurant? This test assesses exactly that, and is particularly important for anyone considering hearing aids.
5. Tympanometry
A quick, non-invasive check of your middle ear — often the cause of hearing difficulties that people don’t realise are treatable.
6. Your results, clearly explained
Paul walks you through your audiogram in plain language. You leave knowing exactly where you stand — with no pressure to make any decisions on the day.

Hearing loss is almost always gradual, which is exactly why it is so easy to miss. Most people adapt to it without realising how much they are no longer hearing. If any of the following feel familiar, it is worth getting checked:

How much does a private hearing test cost in Leeds?
Our standard hearing test is £78 and our comprehensive hearing evaluation is £115. Children’s assessments are available. Please call for details. All pricing is transparent with no hidden fees, and there is never any obligation to purchase hearing aids.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book directly online or by phone, with no referral needed. If your GP has recommended an assessment, we are happy to share a summary of findings with them after your appointment.
How long does a hearing test take?
A standard hearing test takes 30–45 minutes. Our comprehensive hearing evaluation runs up to 90 minutes. Both are significantly longer than the 15–20 minute appointments typical of NHS or high-street settings.
What is the difference between a hearing test and a hearing evaluation?
A hearing test will provide you with a full assessment of your hearing thresholds. This is often required for work or simply to understand your baseline hearing. You will receive a copy of your pure tone audiogram. Our hearing evaluation expands this and is more suied if you are considering using hearing devices or know you will need them.
Are free hearing tests at high-street chains reliable?
High-street free hearing tests are primarily a sales entry point. They typically do not include speech-in-noise testing, tympanometry, or the depth of case history that a thorough audiological evaluation requires. Many clients come to The Hearing Space after a high-street assessment failed to identify the full picture.
Do you offer children's hearing tests?
Yes. As a specialist for children, Paul provides private hearing assessments for children, typically aged three and above, using age-appropriate techniques including play audiometry and OAE testing and tests for glue ear. Assessments are calm, gentle, and fully explained to parents. Home visits are available where clinic attendance is difficult.
