Paul Shaw, MSc, Clinical Director
After experiencing tinnitus as an undergraduate student at Leeds University, I decided to study audiology at postgraduate level, achieving my MSc in Audiology in the early 90s. Several decades later, I would return to Yorkshire as a Leeds audiologist!
Following my MSc, I qualified as a Clinical Scientist in Audiology, the highest level of audiology training in the NHS. For over ten years, I worked as a specialist paediatric audiologist in the NHS, alongside some of the top audiologists and Ear, Nose, and Throat specialists in the UK.
I then worked as a lecturer and researcher at the University of Leeds. Alongside responsibity for the education and training of hundreds of undergraduates, I carried out various research projects.
Professionally, I was a national assessor for the NHS for over twenty years. My interest in research and writing led to a number of international scientific publications and to publications in audiology textbooks and national audiology protocols.
More recently, I qualified as a Registered Hearing Aid Dispenser, which is necessary to practice as a hearing aid dispenser in the UK.
After working in audiology for many years, I recognise that hearing loss affects people differently. Some are keen to get help, others less so. My role is to provide expert advice and guidance, with you at the centre of everything we do.
My vision with ‘The Hearing Space’ is to provide a truly independent, specialist service, providing bespoke hearing solutions in a relaxed and friendly environment.
I hold an enhanced DBS certificate, which is necessary when working with children and vulnerable adults in health and social care.
I look forward to helping you to hear more.
Choosing your Audiologist
Who you choose as your Leeds Audiologist can make the difference between hearing a bit better with hearing aids and hearing much better.
For more information on why investing in your hearing may be important, see our blog post, ‘The benefits of investing in hearing care‘.
Once you have made the decision to invest in your hearing, there are several questions you should ask.
‘What are the qualifications of the person I will see? This has been partly covered in a blog post, ‘Who carries out earwax removal and where is earwax removal done?‘
Should I see a high-street provider or a small, independent provider? WHICH magazine consistently rates independent providers as the best option for hearing healthcare. There are many reasons for this but one is discussed in a blog titled, ‘What are Real Ear Measures?‘
Does it matter if I see the same person for all my appointments? Studies have shown that building a relationship with your hearing aid provider is crucial to the success of your hearing aid experience.
Is it easier to just go to my opticians as they provide hearing care? Many opticians provide hearing care using visiting audiologists from high-street chains. Often, they visit once or twice a week, with a high turnover of staff.
Fitting hearing aids must be similar to fitting glasses. A definite NO. There is both an art and science to hearing aid provision. The same hearing aids, often requiring considerable investment, can give vastly different results depending on how they are set up.
Do hearing aid providers pressure people into buying hearing aids? Unfortunately, many high-street providers use sales techniques to persuade clients to purchase hearing aids. Our Leeds Audiologist will only ever advise and recommend options for you. We want you to make the right choices in a relaxed, unpressured environment.
“I visited Paul as I was having some hearing loss. He patiently and thoroughly assessed my hearing and provided a very effective remedy. I was seen quickly. The consulting space is great. Location is super convenient.
Thank you.”
“I would highly recommend the Hearing Space. Paul provided a very professional and thorough service, both in the initial removal of my ear wax and in the selection and fitting of my hearing aids. He explained everything clearly and sympathetically”
“I am in my nineties and Paul has just fitted my new hearing aids. I am absolutely delighted with them. He is a consummate professional and no minor detail escapes him. He has treated me with such kindness. He is also a very delightful, caring person and I would heartily recommend anybody with hearing problems to contact him. I’m so glad I found him.”
“Excellent, friendly and professional service from Paul yesterday. Diagnosed and sorted issue quickly and efficiently despite me giving misleading information from my GP.”
