Paul Shaw, MSc, Clinical Director

After experiencing tinnitus as an undergraduate student at Leeds University, I decided to study audiology at postgraduate level, achieving my MSc in Audiology in the early 90s. Several decades later, I would return to Yorkshire as a Leeds hearing specialist!

Following my MSc, I qualified as a Clinical Scientist in Audiology, the highest level of audiology training in the NHS. For over ten years, I worked as a specialist paediatric audiologist in the NHS alongside some of the UK’s top audiologists and Ear, Nose, and Throat specialists.

Next came my role as a lecturer and researcher at the University of Leeds. My responsibilities included educating and training hundreds of undergraduates, as well as conducting research and writing.

Professionally, I was a national assessor for the NHS for over twenty years. My interest in research and writing led to several international scientific publications and publications in audiology textbooks and national audiology protocols.

More recently, I qualified as a Registered Hearing Aid Dispenser, which is necessary to practice as a hearing aid dispenser in the UK.

After working in audiology for many years, I recognise that hearing loss affects people differently. Some are keen to get help, others less so. As a hearing specialist, I provide expert advice and guidance with you at the centre of everything we do.

The vision of ‘The Hearing Space’  is to provide a genuinely independent hearing specialist service, providing community-based hearing solutions in a relaxed and friendly environment.

I look forward to helping you to hear more.

Choosing your Hearing Specialist

Who you choose as your hearing specialist can make the difference between hearing a bit better and hearing much better.

For more information on why investing in your hearing may be important, see our blog post, The benefits of investing in hearing care‘.

Once you have made the decision to invest in your hearing, there are several questions you should ask.

‘What are the qualifications of the person I will see? This has been partly covered in a blog post, Who carries out earwax removal and where is earwax removal done?

Should I see a high-street provider or a small, independent provider? Which magazine consistently rates independent providers as the best option for hearing healthcare. There are many reasons for this, one of which is discussed in a blog titled What are Real Ear Measures?

Does it matter if I see the same person for all my appointments? Studies have shown that building a relationship with your hearing provider is crucial to the success of your hearing aid experience.

Is it easier to just go to my opticians, as they provide hearing care? Many opticians provide hearing care using visiting audiologists from high-street chains. They often visit once or twice a week, and the staff turnover is high.

Fitting hearing devices must be similar to fitting glasses, right? No. Setting up amplification is both an art and a science. I have seen many clients who have paid a lot for their devices from elsewhere, and after one session with me, they are hearing much better than before.

Do hearing providers pressure people into buying hearing devices? Unfortunately, many high-street providers use sales techniques to persuade clients to purchase hearing devices. Our Leeds Audiologist will only ever advise and recommend options for you. We want you to make the right choices in a relaxed, unpressured environment.

“I visited Paul as I was having some hearing loss. He patiently and thoroughly assessed my hearing and provided a very effective remedy. I was seen quickly. The consulting space is great. Location is super convenient.
Thank you.”

“Highly recommend the Hearing Space. Paul provided a very professional and thorough service, both in the initial removal of my ear wax and in the selection and fitting of my hearing aids. He explained everything clearly and sympathetically”

“Now in my nineties and Paul has just fitted my new hearing aids. I am absolutely delighted with them. He is a consummate professional and no minor detail escapes him. He has treated me with such kindness. He is also a very delightful, caring person and I would heartily recommend anybody with hearing problems to contact him. I’m so glad I found him.”

Excellent, friendly and professional service from Paul yesterday. Diagnosed and sorted issue quickly and efficiently despite me being given misleading information from my GP.”
