Children’s hearing tests

Helping children hear clearly — expert paediatric audiology you can trust.

When a child struggles to hear properly, it can affect everything from speech development to confidence in the classroom. For many families, the problem isn’t always obvious at first, it can start subtly, with your child turning up the TV, not responding to their name, or seeming “distracted” in group settings.

At The Hearing Space, we provide professional, friendly children’s hearing tests in Leeds, helping families get clear answers and tailored support. With many years of paediatric audiology experience, we make assessments easy, calm and age-appropriate, so children feel comfortable and parents feel reassured.

I'd had severely blocked ears for a couple of months and was annoying myself and family because of it. Paul saw me on short notice and was very professional and personable, and got all the wax out. Being able to hear again is a revelation - highly recommended! -- Original review submitted 2023 but removed by Google for 'fake engagement'. No appeals process and I care, so resubmitted as new.

I have had great service from Paul at The Hearing Space over the past few years. Having initially had an inaccurate hearing test at one of the high-street vendors, I thought I should get in touch with a properly qualified and experienced audiologist. Paul let me try out several different types of hearing aid from several different manufacturers before purchasing a pair. Since then he has always been ready to sort out any problems with my hearing or my hearing aids. I highly recommended his service.

I cannot recommend the hearing space too highly. Paul is a very knowledgeable and a kind person. He listens to all of your issues and comes up with the best solution for your problem. He puts you at ease with his gentle approach and gives you confidence that he will listen and get you back to where your hearing is at it’s best.

Paul was very professional and reassuring throughout my visit, and explained what he was doing and why very concisely, and in layman's terms. I would thoroughly recommend his clinic for ear related matters.

Common hearing problems in children

One of the most common causes of hearing difficulties in children is ‘glue ear’ which is a build-up of sticky fluid behind the eardrum that affects how sound is transmitted to the inner ear.

Signs of glue ear can include:

  • Not responding when spoken to

  • Turning the TV up or sitting too close

  • Unclear speech or speech delay

  • Difficulty following instructions at home or school

  • Teachers noticing listening or concentration problems

In some cases, glue ear resolves naturally, but if it persists for more than three months, it can impact learning and communication.

Our audiologist can assess your child’s hearing, confirm if glue ear is present, and explain the best next steps, whether that’s monitoring, ENT referral, or supportive hearing solutions.
