FAQ

How do I book an appointment?

For ear wax removal, hearing tests, hearing assessments and hearing aids in Leeds, please book online or call us to arrange an appointment.

What is the accessibility like at your hearing clinic?

Our hearing clinic access involves one flight of stairs and does not have wheelchair access. However, we are happy to offer home visits for clients with mobility concerns. Please contact us to arrange this.

Do you offer audiology services for children?

Yes, we provide audiology services in Leeds for children aged 3 and above. Please contact us for more specific information or to discuss your child’s needs.

What is microsuction ear wax removal?

Microsuction uses a magnifying device to allow clear vision alongside a fine suction tube, which carefully removes ear wax from the ear canal. It can be performed in both children and adults.

Microsuction is usually a painless procedure. Occasionally, there may be mild discomfort if wax is attached to the ear canal skin. Our ear wax removal appointments are a minimum of 45 minutes, allowing time to assess your ears and proceed carefully. If necessary, small tools can be used to dislodge stubborn wax.

Can my child have ear wax removed?

Yes. Our audiology clinic in Leeds provides ear wax removal for children. This is carried out by our Clinical Director, Paul, who has extensive experience working with babies and young children. Ear wax can be successfully removed from children’s ears using a variety of techniques.

What is involved in a hearing assessment?

We carry out a range of tests to assess hearing function. A standard hearing test involves wearing headphones or small insert tubes in the ears and listening to a series of sounds at different frequencies. The quietest level heard at each frequency is recorded as the hearing threshold.

This test is known as pure tone audiometry.

What other hearing tests are available?

Pure tone audiometry is the standard hearing evaluation carried out in a quiet environment using single pure tones.

More advanced tests are also available. Speech-in-noise tests are carried out in our Leeds audiology clinic to assess how well a person can hear speech sounds in background noise. These tests are particularly useful because people can have similar hearing thresholds but very different listening abilities. Speech-in-noise testing is routinely carried out at The Hearing Space for anyone considering hearing aid technology.

What are the differences between hearing aids?

Hearing aids vary by manufacturer, style, and performance level. A useful comparison is with cars, which come in different brands, body styles, and technology levels.

Similarly, hearing aids are available from manufacturers such as Phonak, Oticon and Widex, in styles including Behind-the-Ear (BTE), In-the-Ear (ITE) and Completely-in-the-Canal (CIC). They also come in different performance levels, such as Essential, Advanced and Premium, to suit different hearing needs and lifestyles.
