Already have hearing aids? Try our refit service

We regularly see people who’ve bought hearing devices elsewhere and still aren’t hearing as well as they should be.

If that sounds like you, our refit service could help. We’ll carefully assess your hearing, take detailed measurements of how your current devices have been set up, and adjust them to genuinely improve how well you hear.

Many people we see leave hearing noticeably better, without needing to invest in new devices at all, saving hundreds or even thousands of pounds.

Hearing technology explained

Bluetooth connectivity

Most modern hearing aids can connect directly to smartphones and entertainment systems, letting you stream high-quality audio from your TV, computer, or hi-fi.

You can also take phone calls hands-free and join online meetings hands-free through your hearing devices.

We’ll consider your hearing assessment results, lifestyle and the situations where you find hearing most difficult, then recommend hearing aids with the technology that will be genuinely useful to you.

Remote microphone technology

Even with hearing aids, hearing someone at a distance or in a noisy environment can sometimes be difficult.

A remote microphone can be placed close to the person speaking and send their voice directly to your hearing aids. This can be particularly useful in meetings, lectures, restaurants and other challenging listening situations.

Extremely useful in lectures, meetings and in any situation where you are not close to the person or people talking.

Our audiologist will answer any questions you may have on these devices.

Frequently asked questions

What are the differences between hearing aids?

Hearing aids vary by manufacturer, style, features and technology level. We work with leading manufacturers including Phonak, Oticon, Widex, Starkey and ReSound.

Different styles include behind-the-ear (BTE), receiver-in-canal (RIC), in-the-ear (ITE) and completely-in-canal (CIC) hearing aids. Technology levels also vary depending on the listening environments and features you need.

Rather than recommending a particular brand, we’ll help you choose the hearing aids that best suit your hearing, lifestyle and budget.

How do hearing aids work?

Modern hearing aids use microphones to pick up sound, a digital processor to analyse and adjust it, and a receiver to deliver the processed sound into your ear.

Unlike simply making everything louder, hearing aids can be programmed for your individual hearing loss and can help make speech clearer while managing background noise.

Will I have to adjust my hearing aids?

Modern hearing aids automatically adapt to different listening environments, so you shouldn’t need to make frequent adjustments yourself.

You can still change the volume or select different listening programmes when you want to, and many hearing aids can also be controlled from a smartphone.

After your hearing aids are fitted, we’ll fine-tune them with you over time to make sure you’re getting the best possible hearing in the situations that matter to you.

Will I need two hearing aids?

If you have hearing loss in both ears, two hearing aids are usually recommended.

Wearing hearing aids in both ears can make it easier to understand speech, particularly in background noise, help you work out where sounds are coming from, and provide a more balanced and natural listening experience.

We’ll assess each ear individually and recommend one or two hearing aids based on your hearing loss and individual needs.

How often will I need to get new hearing aids?

Most hearing aids last around five years, although many continue to work well for longer with appropriate care and maintenance.

You don’t necessarily need to replace your hearing aids simply because newer technology becomes available. We would normally consider replacing them when your hearing needs change, the devices become less reliable, or newer technology offers a worthwhile improvement for you.

With our hearing care plans, you’ll have ongoing aftercare and annual hearing tests so we can make sure your hearing aids continue to meet your needs.

Will hearing aids help my tinnitus?

For some people with hearing loss, wearing hearing aids can make tinnitus less noticeable or easier to manage.

By improving access to everyday sounds, hearing aids may reduce the contrast between tinnitus and the surrounding environment. Some hearing aids also include additional sound-therapy features that can be useful for tinnitus management.

If tinnitus is one of your concerns, we’ll take this into account when assessing your hearing and recommending hearing aids.

Is there a lot of maintenance involved with hearing aids?

Hearing aids need a small amount of regular care to keep them working at their best. This usually involves wiping them clean, keeping them dry and occasionally changing a wax filter or other replaceable parts.

We’ll show you how to look after your hearing aids when they’re fitted, and it quickly becomes part of your normal routine.

If you have any problems, cleaning or maintenance can also be taken care of as part of your ongoing aftercare with us.

Do I need to insure my hearing aids?

Your manufacturer’s warranty covers faults and technical problems, but it may not cover accidental damage or loss.

Because hearing aids are valuable, it’s worth checking whether they’re covered by your home or contents insurance. Some insurers allow hearing aids to be added as specified personal possessions, including cover away from home.

We recommend checking the level of cover, excess and any exclusions with your insurer.

Does it matter who fits my hearing aids?

Yes. The expertise of the audiologist and the quality of the fitting can make a significant difference to how well you hear with your hearing aids.

At The Hearing Space, we use real-ear measurements (REMs) to check the sound delivered by your hearing aids while they are in your ears. This allows us to verify and fine-tune the fitting for your individual hearing loss.

We also provide ongoing adjustments and follow-up care, because a successful hearing-aid fitting is a process rather than a one-off appointment.
